Personal Advisory / Life, Identity & Direction

Your life can be working and still no longer fit.

There are seasons when the central question is not whether something is psychologically wrong or whether you can perform at a higher level. It is what you want now, who you are becoming, what you may have outgrown, and how to make an important decision without allowing fear, momentum, obligation, or other people's expectations to make it for you.

Simply Midori provides psychologically informed Personal Advisory for adults navigating consequential decisions, identity shifts, relationships, transitions, questions of meaning, and life direction.

Personal Advisory is not psychotherapy or executive coaching. It is a rigorous place to think carefully about your life with someone capable of helping you examine what may be difficult to see clearly from inside it.

When Something Has Changed

You may not be in crisis. The question may still deserve serious attention.

You may have built a life that works remarkably well and still be wondering whether it is the life you want to keep building.

You may be deciding whether to take the opportunity, leave the role, stay in the relationship, move your family, change direction, redefine success, or finally make room for a part of your life that has remained secondary for years.

You may know exactly what everyone around you needs while becoming less certain what you want. Or nothing obvious may be wrong. You simply recognize that a role, ambition, relationship, community, belief, or version of yourself that once fit no longer fits in quite the same way.

These moments are difficult precisely because there may be several reasonable options. The work is not always finding the “right” answer. It is seeing clearly enough to understand what each path requires and which life you are actually choosing.

What Should Become Clearer

The aim is not perfect certainty. It is better judgment.

Personal Advisory is designed to improve the quality of the thinking beneath an important decision, transition, or direction.

01

What the real question is

The decision you are debating may not be the issue actually keeping you stuck. We begin by clarifying what you are genuinely trying to understand or decide.

02

What is influencing the choice

Values, fear, relationships, identity, responsibility, ambition, history, belonging, economics, and other people's expectations can all shape a decision without being equally visible.

03

What each option actually costs

Meaningful decisions usually involve tradeoffs. Clarity often increases when we stop searching for the path with no loss and examine what each direction genuinely requires.

04

What you are choosing toward

An opportunity, relationship, commitment, or transition becomes easier to evaluate when you understand the kind of person and life you are trying to build.

Where Personal Advisory Fits

Similar questions can require very different kinds of work.

Simply Midori works across psychotherapy, executive coaching, and Personal Advisory because significant human questions do not all belong in the same professional container.

01 / THERAPY
Clinical Work

Individual Therapy

Therapy is appropriate when the primary purpose of the work is clinical, including mental health symptoms, trauma, significant emotional distress, psychological treatment, or recurring patterns that require therapeutic care.

02 / COACHING

Executive Coaching

Executive Coaching is appropriate when the central questions involve leadership, professional performance, communication, authority, judgment, organizational relationships, execution, or the demands of an executive role.

03 / ADVISORY
Personal Work

Personal Advisory

Personal Advisory is appropriate when the central questions involve your life: identity, relationships, values, meaning, direction, significant transitions, competing priorities, and consequential personal decisions.

The distinction is not about whether one problem is more important than another. It is about what the work is for.

From a Personal Advisory Client
“The value of working with Simply Midori has not been simply getting advice. The work helps me slow down enough to understand what is actually driving a decision, recognize patterns I could not see clearly from inside them, and think through the consequences of how I choose to respond. I can usually understand a situation intellectually; these conversations help me get underneath that understanding and make better decisions about how I want to show up in my life and relationships.”

What We Work On

The question you bring is often connected to something larger.

Personal Advisory is not organized around a fixed curriculum. Important decisions rarely remain inside one category.

01

Identity

Who are you when a role, relationship, achievement, community, or previous version of your life stops defining you in the same way? We examine what you may have outgrown and what is emerging in its place.

02

Direction

We examine what you are actually trying to build over the next several years and whether your current commitments are moving you toward that life or simply keeping you busy.

03

Relationships

Marriage, family, friendship, community, boundaries, loyalty, responsibility, conflict, and changing expectations can all become part of the work when they shape the decision in front of you.

04

Meaning & Values

We examine what matters enough to organize your life around, whether your lived priorities reflect those values, and what success means now rather than what it meant five or ten years ago.

05

Life Architecture

Work, marriage, parenting, friendship, health, money, faith, ambition, rest, contribution, and responsibility all compete for finite attention. We examine how those pieces should fit together in the life you actually intend to live.

06

Consequential Decisions

A move. A relationship. A professional opportunity. A family decision. A major commitment or transition. We make the competing values, costs, fears, possibilities, and consequences easier to see.

How the Work Develops

We will not make your decisions for you. We will help you think better about the decisions you are making.

Good advisory work should strengthen your judgment rather than replace it.

01

Clarify the question.

We begin with what is happening, why it matters now, what you have already considered, and where the decision becomes difficult. Sometimes the question you arrive with is the right question. Sometimes a more important one emerges underneath it.

02

Understand what is shaping it.

We examine the values, relationships, assumptions, responsibilities, history, fears, ambitions, practical realities, and identities influencing the situation.

03

Make the tradeoffs visible.

Important decisions often remain unresolved because we are looking for an option that preserves every benefit and eliminates every cost. We clarify what each path makes possible, what it asks you to give up, and what kind of person or life it requires.

04

Move from thinking into choice.

Some questions resolve through reflection. Others require a conversation, experiment, boundary, change in behavior, or decision. What happens next becomes information we can use rather than evidence that you chose perfectly or failed.

Psychological Depth Without Over-Pathologizing

Knowing yourself does not mean you can always see yourself clearly.

Human beings are not detached observers of their own lives. We are participants in the systems we are trying to understand. That makes certain influences difficult to recognize from the inside.

What feels like responsibility can sometimes include fear of disappointing people. Loyalty can become difficult to distinguish from guilt. Achievement may reflect genuine ambition, a need for security, or both. A desire for change may represent growth, or it may be an attempt to escape something that needs to be addressed where you are.

The reverse matters too. Psychology can become too eager to uncover pathology where none exists. Ambition can simply be ambition. Commitment can simply be commitment. A difficult choice may be difficult because something meaningful will be lost whichever path you choose.

Personal Advisory uses psychological understanding to improve clarity without turning ordinary human complexity into a diagnosis.

What Working Together Looks Like

Begin with a conversation. Decide what comes next after that.

You do not need to commit to an ongoing advisory relationship before understanding whether the work is useful for you.

Step One

Complimentary Fit Conversation

60 minutes

A member of the Simply Midori team will learn what you are navigating, gather baseline context, determine whether Personal Advisory is the appropriate container, and help identify the right next step.

  • Complimentary
  • No obligation to continue
  • Virtual
  • Available nationwide
  • Stephanie follows up within 24 hours
Step Two

Personal Advisory Session

$600

A focused 90-minute advisory session centered on the decision, transition, relationship, identity question, or direction you are trying to think through.

  • 90-minute session
  • One focused session may be enough
  • Additional focused sessions are available
  • Ongoing advisory is available when useful
  • No predetermined program

The complimentary conversation is designed to understand the situation, determine fit, and identify the appropriate next step. The substantive Personal Advisory work begins in the 90-minute advisory session.

From a Personal Advisory Client
“What I value about working with Joshua is having a place to think through important decisions without being given a formula or told what I should do. He asks questions that help me see the situation differently, challenges assumptions I may not realize I am making, and helps me separate what I actually want from pressure, expectations, and everything else surrounding the decision. I leave our conversations with greater clarity about what matters and how I want to move forward.”

Personal Advisory & Psychotherapy

The professional boundary matters.

Personal Advisory is a non-clinical service. It is not psychotherapy and is not used to diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

The work may still draw on sophisticated psychological understanding of identity, relationships, emotion, behavioral patterns, history, meaning, and human systems. The difference is the purpose of the relationship. Personal Advisory is centered on perspective, judgment, values, decision-making, transitions, relationships, and life direction rather than clinical treatment.

If what you bring would be better served through psychotherapy, we will say so rather than trying to make it fit Personal Advisory. Likewise, if the central issue is primarily leadership performance or organizational responsibility, Executive Coaching may be more appropriate.

Privacy: Personal Advisory conversations are handled privately and discreetly. Because Personal Advisory is a non-clinical service rather than psychotherapy, it operates under a different professional framework than clinical treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What you may want to know before reaching out.

Is Personal Advisory therapy?

No. Psychotherapy is a clinical service designed to assess and treat psychological concerns. Personal Advisory is a non-clinical service focused on decisions, identity, relationships, meaning, values, perspective, transitions, and life direction.

Who provides Personal Advisory?

Personal Advisory is a Simply Midori service and may be provided by members of our therapist and advisory team. The complimentary first conversation helps us understand what you are navigating and determine the appropriate person and professional container for the work.

Is this the same as life coaching?

There may be overlap in subject matter, but the work is not built around a standardized coaching model or the assumption that the goal you arrive with should automatically become the goal we help you achieve.

Sometimes the most useful question is whether the goal itself still makes sense. Personal Advisory emphasizes disciplined inquiry, psychological sophistication, systems thinking, and the examination of what may be influencing the decision beneath its obvious facts.

Will you tell me what you think?

Yes, when a perspective would be useful. Advisory work should not mean sitting passively while you think aloud. We may challenge your reasoning, identify a contradiction, question an assumption, or offer another interpretation of what is happening.

The objective is not to become the person who makes your decisions. It is to strengthen your ability to make them.

Can I come for one session?

Yes. Some people come with one consequential decision and find a single 90-minute Personal Advisory session sufficient. Others schedule additional focused conversations or continue in an ongoing advisory relationship.

How much does Personal Advisory cost?

The initial 60-minute fit conversation is complimentary. A 90-minute Personal Advisory session is $600. You can decide after the initial conversation whether you want to continue.

Is Personal Advisory available outside Illinois?

Yes. Personal Advisory is a non-clinical service and is offered virtually nationwide.

What happens after I contact you?

Stephanie will follow up within 24 hours to coordinate the complimentary 60-minute conversation. During that conversation, a member of our team will learn what you are navigating, gather baseline context, and help determine the appropriate next step. There is no obligation to continue.

What if I am not sure whether I need therapy, Executive Coaching, or Personal Advisory?

You do not need to decide that before reaching out. Start with what is happening. Part of our responsibility is helping you determine which professional container is appropriate.
