In today’s world, when we see unfairness or injustice, most of us get angry or frustrated. But Abigail offers a different way—a biblical way.

Introduction To Abigail’s Bible Study
Abigail is introduced in the narrative of 1 Samuel as the wife of Nabal, a wealthy but foolish man. Despite her difficult circumstances, Abigail demonstrates remarkable qualities, such as generosity, humility, and quick thinking.
Abigail’s story is one of courage and compassion, illustrating the power of a single individual to make a positive impact even in the most dire circumstances. She is an inspiring example of resilience and faith, reminding us that even in the darkest times, there is always hope for redemption and reconciliation.
Who Is Abigail?
Abigail, a prominent figure in the Old Testament, was initially known as the wife of Nabal, a wealthy man from southern Judah. Following Nabal’s death, Abigail became one of David’s wives, the future king of Israel. Her story is recounted in 1 Samuel 25.
At the outset, Abigail resided in Maon, a town in Paran’s wilderness near the Sinai Peninsula. Described as both intelligent and beautiful, Abigail played a pivotal role in preserving her husband’s household and averting a potentially disastrous confrontation with David. Her actions not only spare her household from destruction but also earn her praise and admiration from David.
A Brief Summary Of Abigail
In 1 Samuel, David and his band of men are fleeing from the wrath of King Saul and find themselves seeking refuge among local shepherds during a sheep-shearing festival, a time of indulgence and celebration. Yet, tensions escalate when Nabal, the host of the festivities, insults David and his men, provoking the young warrior’s anger.
As David vows vengeance against Nabal and his household, Abigail, Nabal’s wife, springs into action with remarkable swiftness and ingenuity. Recognizing the imminent threat of violence, she orchestrates a lavish feast to appease David and prevent bloodshed. With eloquent words and a humble demeanor, Abigail pleads for mercy.
In this pivotal moment, Abigail’s intervention not only averts tragedy but also showcases her keen understanding of diplomacy and unwavering commitment to peace.
Why does Abigail’s story matter?
As Christians, we often forget that we live in a broken world filled with sin. Sometimes, when we see injustices or problems, we focus on factors like race, gender, age, or nationality without recognizing the underlying brokenness and sinfulness of the world.
It’s important to acknowledge this brokenness first so that we can separate a person’s actions, or sin, from who they are- as Jesus does for us!
By doing so, we learn to love the person while disliking their sin, a concept exemplified by Abigail. In situations where we might be tempted to disrespect or dishonor others, Abigail shows a different path – responding with love and compassion. Her example teaches us that in our marriages, families, or when protecting those we love, we can also choose to show generosity and grace.
How Does Abigail Relate To Women In 2024?
Many women can find resonance in Abigail’s tale in today’s world for various reasons. Firstly, she grappled with the difficulties of being in a troubled marriage, a situation that numerous women can empathize with. Despite facing challenges within her marriage, Abigail chose to honor her husband, demonstrating a commitment to her vows and a desire to maintain stability in her household.
Additionally, Abigail’s response to injustice demonstrates a timeless lesson in humility and generosity. Rather than succumbing to bitterness or retaliation when faced with unfair treatment, she chose to extend grace and compassion, even when it may have seemed undeserved (both in her marriage and to the group of men coming to kill her family). Day One of Abigal’s Bible Study
First, read 1 Samuel 20:30-24:22 to understand the story better by providing a background. Then, read 1 Samuel 25:1-13 for the central part of the story. Even if you know the story, try to approach it like it’s new to you. After reading, take a moment to reflect below:
1. What do these verses tell you about Abigail?
2. Describe the situation between David and Nabal.
3. What insights do you gain about Nabal’s character from the descriptions of him and his treatment of David?
4. Read Romans Chapter 13, verses 1-10. How do the principles here apply to this situation?
5. Prayer: Ask God to give you the names of people you need to give thanks, praise, or honor to. One may be someone who impacted you, yet you have never thanked them. It may be someone to whom you should express honor for something he has achieved, but you find yourself jealous instead. Write down the names and what you owe them. Why have you failed to do so up until now—pride, stubbornness, unconcern, laziness? Talk to God about it.
6. Contact at least one of those you listed in the previous question, and then share what happens with the group.
Day Two of Abigal’s Bible Study
Start today by reading 1 Samuel 25:14-35. Start today by reading 1 Samuel 25:14-35. Then, take a moment to reflect on the passages and jot down your thoughts below:
7. What was the testimony of Nabal’s servant concerning David and his men in contrast to what he said about Nabal?
8. What do the servant’s actions tell us about Abigail? Why?
9. Why was David so angry with Nabal, and what did he decide to do about it?
10. Nabal (which means fool) was not his proper name but was a surname by which he was popularly designated on account of his folly. What do you learn from Abigail about dealing with a fool? About dealing with an angry person (David)?
11. Do Abigail’s actions show love and loyalty to Nabal? Why or why not? 12. Write about a time when love forced you to act for the person’s best interest, even if the person did not understand your actions.
12. Prayer: Ask God for the courage to act in love when it’s hard.
Day Three of Abigal’s Bible Study
Start today by reading Proverbs 31:10-31. Then, take a minute to reflect on the passages and jot down your thoughts below:
13.Compare the description of the excellent wife with what you know about Abigail.
14. If you are married, what are some specific changes you need to make today to fit this description of the excellent wife in Prov. 31:10-31? If you are not married, what do you learn here about being a wife?
15. Read Ephesians 5:22. Would you consider Abigail submissive to her husband? Why or why not?
16. Write about a time when it was hard for you to submit to a husband, boss, or any other authority over you. How do you change your attitude in those cases?
17. Prayer: Write a prayer of confession as you consider how well you submit to those in authority over you, not just outwardly but also inwardly!
Day Four of Abigal’s Bible Study
Start today by first reading Romans 12:17-21. Then, read 1 Samuel 25:36-42. Then, take a minute to reflect on the passages and jot down your thoughts below:
18. List what we are to do when we have been wronged.
19. Which of the above instructions is hardest for you?
20. Write about a recent time in your life when you planned something that would have been wrong, but God sent someone or something to stop you. Did you listen or not? If that has never happened to you, have you ever seen someone considering a wrong action and warned them? What happened?
21. Read and write Proverbs 11:31. How does this proverb come true in the lives of Nabal and Abigail?
22. Prayer: Pray for God to protect you when you are determined to dothe wrong thing. Thank Him for the times when you know He has done this in the past.
Day Five of Abigal’s Bible Study
Start today by rereading 1 Samuel 25. Afterward, reflect and jot down your thoughts below:
23. Describe Abigail’s husband.
24. How would you feel if you were Abigail and had to deal with Nabal?
25. Write down any insights you have into the ways Abigail was used by God for His purposes.
26. Prayerfully consider Abigail’s character. Write a description of her qualities and record what she did to reveal each attribute.
27. Study 1 Corinthians 13:1-8. Write out what you learned about love and how it applies to Abigail.
28. If you are married, there are surely some qualities in your husband that you would love to change. (Some of you may have more than one you would change!) However, instead of trying to change him, what do you learn from Abigail about being the wife you should be? If you are not married, what can you learn about expecting God to change your boss, your parents, etc.?
29. Prayer: Write a prayer asking for the grace to love others when they are not who you want them to be.
